    30-40 Krag Brass Availability

I was viewing past pages on the Kragicon section and ran across a thread on page three started back in 2015, with the last post May of 16' dealing with with low brass availability. Being only a Krag owner since last August and having a hard time finding brass back then, thought I'd pass my search for brass on. I'm probably preaching to the choir on this, but in case new Krag owners/reloaders are reading and searching for brass. Was going to just reply using that org thread, but site info advised old thread, may not be applicable to do so.

I bought the Krag at a gunshow while in the hunt for a 03 Springfield, to nice of a gun and price to pass up, always wanted one. Started searching my normal sources for a set of dies and brass. Long time shooter/reloader so I had plenty of 30 cal bullets, primers, and a 30 cal Lyman mold for casting gas checked bullets. A few of the outfits were out of dies, did find one, but brass, either used or new was really absent. Checked and was advised that the major outfits who produce brass just do limited runs. Did call Remington, they advised not known when they would.

After a lot of searching I found new brass at Graf and Sons Reloading out of Mexico, Missouri. Not cheap, but available. $43 per 50 not counting shipping, they do have discount on 500 rds. It has their 'Graf' headstamp on it and I found it is made by a old line brass manufacturing company that specializes in older/obsolete calibers. If I recall, I think they're located in Minnesota. A shooter friend of mine who shoots a lot of older lever gun calibers advised he has gotten their brass before and excellent experience with it. I did get 150 rds, probably should have got another 50, but can do later. Thought I'd pass on in case any one is searching for 30-40 brass. Nice, good quality looking brass. Haven't had a chance yet to shoot any, but that's coming. I did check some of the major businesses and a few smaller outlets that I've dealt with and know of and 30-40 brass is still out of stock except for Graf.

Thanks for the info, I wonder if we can get it up here... I do have some, sold a bag at our last show here and ours goes for about $1 CDN each...for empty unprimed once fired. New ammo and brass are about unavailable. I too have the dies and trim die and loaded what I needed...
    Regards, Jim

Remington has recently ran loaded ammo, Winchester has said a run of loaded ammo is coming soon. Hopefully they made some extra brass for those of us who reload! If they have, it should be hitting the market soon, hopefully at more reasonable prices.

Remington does that annually I think and the ammo runs out immediately...as for Winchester, their brass isn't what it used to be so I'm not so sure how that would be.

I think Midwayusa had the loaded ammo last month. You might call them.

Update on 30-40 brass. Natchez Shooting Supply of Chattanooga, Tenn has Hornady 30-40 brass in stock for $41.29 per 50 right now. If order is $49.99 or more shipping is free with Promo code FS171113 until 12:00 midnight 11/15/17. Graf and Sons still have their headstamped 30-40 brass in stock also. I checked around various outfits (Midway, Midsouth, Cabela's, and a few others, none have any in stock. I called Remington and t/w rep at their ammo/component plant and was advised that they (Remington) are going to concentrate only on loaded ammo for the foreseeable time and probably will not be offering any brass with the exception of pistol/revolver brass. Winchester isn't making any available either, unable to make contact with Federal. In my area, I've checked around at gun shows/gun shops and nothing in the Iowa/Southern Minn is available as used. The Hornady price is pretty much what the other outfits who are showing it out of stock has on it also. Seems high, higher than I pay for other calibers, but nothing used available, case of pay what the seller is asking or go without. Be one of those situations where when I'm not wanting it, price will drop and brass supply will be glutted with it.

I am really surprised Privi isn't making the brass. Graf is the best way to go for sure.

Quick search on GB turned up used and IIRC new 30-40 brass. Prices look very much like you've already seen.... Expensive, but well worth a look.
Sometimes they don't get bid on...

    Good Luck

P.S. Out of stock, NO back orders at Midsouth. Their Hornady advertised at $38.15 per 50. I have called before and received a Email letting me know when a 'Out of stock' item could be expected back in stock. I can't say enough about Midsouth... Again Good Luck.

The links below (are the same item) and work when I preview, But won't when I POST IT. Don't know why ?

A friend and I, among others, tried contacting PRVI about making some, but to no avail it seems. It'd be pretty simple for them, they already make .303 blanks that would have a long enough neck, if they'd pull some of them out of production to use.
