    SLR L1A1 STRAIGHT PULL

Well this morning I put a good 20+ rounds down the range of my old personel weapon. First time in many years. 7.62 x 51 GGG ammo through a 1961 all wood rifle triangle stock.

Fine for the first 5 rounds and then the usual hard to eject the empty case when the barrel gets hot, until you had fed the rifle with plenty of Browning spray oil!!!

I know I have discussed this with a number of people on here already in the UKicon.

What a waste of a beautiful self loading rifle to make it a straight Pull, when other rifles out there in the UK like the MASS conversions, could so easily have been applied to this weapon.

Only my point of view, but as I write, I understand the MASS days and the 50 Calibre days are very numbered here in the UK!!!

Thanks Gil - whether it's MARS or MASS I still hadn't heard of it, but I know what you mean now! Cheers.

Good to see you Gil. Yes, a pain but you can at least still have one. Unless you have status here, you can't even be considered. Unless it's dewat.
    Regards, Jim

Nice one Gil, great too see it in action and welcome to our small UKicon L1 club, as Jim said, Pity about it being "man op" but its still a pleasure to own an example of the finest Service Rifle ever built...

Maybe off topic and apologies in advance for being so, however it's something that needs raising awareness of -

If you're a UKicon shooter it's worth finding out what a MARS rifle is - it, along with 50 cal, is currently under UK government consultation, namely "moving two firearms (.50 calibre and certain rapid firing rifles) from the general licensing arrangements to the stricter provisions of section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968".
    This means banning them.
Few people shoot 50 cal I know, and yes it doesn't directly affect me either if they get banned, but it comes across as divide and conquer, once they've gone what's the next category to get rid of?
It's worth looking into and writing to your MP about.
Sorry again to hijack the thread but the more people that know about this the better.

    Jon

You are absolutely correct, one way or another this concerns all of us that shoot. There is also a plan to put a maximum MV on in the legislation. Once you have a maximum MV restriction, it is but the moment of a piece of delegated legislation to knock another nought off the end.........

The consultation closes on 9 December, and I intend to put my comments in well before time.

    Jon,

What you said was absolutely accurate and worth airing on here about letting everybody know what MARS stands for and the issues surrounding any future bans to the sport.
This link shows you where the UKicon Armed Forces are and their influence on Police etc on the subject: UK Armed Forces Commentary: Who wants a new 5.56 assault rifle...? As I understand it, a Firearms Dealer found a way around the legislation here in the UK and thus the MARS rifle was born!!

My only gripe, if there is one to air, is why couldn't the L1A1 be converted to MARS (Manual Activated Release System) why it appears just the CZ Semi Auto larger bore market??
I suppose it looks more gucci for those younger owners and more current, compared to what was the best rifle in Military service at the time, cut short in its prime IMHO. It was a man stopper, what it said on the box.

    David TS,

Yes I went for it, Lithgowicon rifle with Parker Hale parts which is always a bonus. The action pivot is a later Parker Hale replacement part, where PH acquired all the ex Enfield L1A1 plant when they re-tooled to build L85's, thanks to MrClark303 for pointing that out.

An AD prefix from the NZ Contract, more stamps on it, then a Roman Wine foot grinder!! Should have shown the figure 11 target all 5 rounds warmers within an inch great group on this barrel. I expected to use a lot more energy in cocking it each time, and knew only too well it drank oil to keep the action working, so a tin of Brownells oil is highly recommended. 1959 wood and stamped 1961 manufacture, and clearly going up in value daily................knowing my luck, it will be the next group to be targetted for a ban, I can feel it in my water!!!!
