No. 4 Mk. I* Long Branch

Hello Gentlemen,

I am attempting to trade for this Enfield No. 4 Mk. I* Long Branch and I wanted some help identifying certain characteristics. I am aware this isn't the appraisal thread, but I also wanted to know what its approximate value is. What I know is that it is a 1944 Long Branch and seems to be all matching. However, there are two odd things I wanted to ask about. First, there are three inscriptions on the butt stock: "D 7 K." He tried saying it was the "Regimental Markings." I've never heard of them doing that, so I am here. Second, there seems to be some kind of glossy varnish over the stock. I've never seen an Enfield with such a glossy stock. He values it at 750 which includes the sling, spike bayonet and 500 rounds.

It's been varnished and the stock has been gouged by John Q Public...not a regimental mark. The ammo is nice and probably makes the deal, depending on what ammo it is. If it's old garbage it may not even fire, or will hangfire. The bayonet is inconsequential. You can get a brand new "N" buttstock from Longbranch though...so that's nothing. BDL Ltd may have them. Looks like a shooter to me. If the ammo is good, it might be OK for a deal. The ammo would make the deal.

It has also been through a FTR ( Factory Thorough Repair ) at Fazakerley. With the wood conditions as they are and having been through a FTR, which could have resulted in many of the original parts being replaced, I would probably value the rifle alone in the 275.00 to 300.00 range. For a shooter, the FTR isn't a big deal as the rifle has been brought back to service specs. For a collector, it's a different view. If it has a beautiful bore and you're looking for something to shoot and not worried about it's collector value, the price I stated is where I would look to be at.

Those 500 rounds if its the Greek HXP then it would be a sweetner to the deal but if its POF then your better off pulling the projies, de-priming, emptying them & reloading with modern powder & primers & reseat the projectiles just my take on things from firing a few hundred rounds of 1967 vintage POF out of a very good No 1 MkIII.

The sling adds nothing to the value, it is not an Enfield sling so adds nothing. The bayonet and scabbard are worth about $25.00. The price he places on the rifle, bayonet and ammunition seems very high to me.

With good HXP ammo you have $375.00 or so. Not much more.

I wonder if he's ever going to come back and fill in the blanks, like what is the ammo? What bore condition...all important points...
