Exclamation Good trade? M1 Carbine for Garand (NEED RESPONSE SOON)

    Hello Gentlemen,

I am possibly doing a trade tomorrow. I will be giving my M1icon Carbine for an M1 Garand. I would like to know if this would be a fair and even trade or not. I need to know pretty soon.

I'll start with my Carbine. It is a 1943 Saginaw. The only two things I know are matching are the barrel and receiver. It seems to have been re-blued at some point. The trigger housing is Inland and the stock is some USGI stock I bought on Ebay, can't find any markings on it. I've not been able to find markings on anything but the Receiver, barrel, and trigger housing. I also have reproduction sling, pouch, and oiler but they were cheap enough to be not really important.

    M1 Carbine:
http://prntscr.com/hd5l4h- Yes I am aware the pouch is on the wrong side, I am left handed.
    http://prntscr.com/hd5l9f- Reads "SAGINAW S.G." Serial: 3495052
http://prntscr.com/hd5li2- You can see the bluing is rich but does not seem to be original bluing color at all.
    http://prntscr.com/hd5lr0- Reads "SAGINAW S.G." ^ "GENERAL MOTORS."
http://prntscr.com/hd5m2p- Some corrosion on buttplate and a thin split in the stock.
http://prntscr.com/hd5m9v- Some of the bluing coming off at edges.

Second the Garand. It is an HRA Garand that is mixmatched. From what he says, it is all USGI parts. Specifically he says, the stock seems to be USGI Springfield with no cracks or splits, just handling marks and scratches. The oprod is an original Springfield WWII uncut (Not sure what that means.) Trigger group is WWII Springfield as well. Barrel is 1963 Springfield he says to be quite nice. He says that any of the parts that aren't HRA are mostly Springfield. He is also including 4 en bloc clips.

    M1 Garand:

This is a tough one and I’ll let others with a better idea of overall value try to help.
I will say, though, that the “uncut” refers to a relief cut that fixed a cracking issue in the oprods. Uncut rods alone are worth over $100 all day long.

I don't think that carbine is showing bluing coming off, it looks like another spray on finish. Blue doesn't wear off like that. That's the last pic I refer to. Personally, I'd do the trade. The barrel of the rifle would need to be as good as the carbine for me though.

Agreed. Probably wouldn't hurt the value to remove that to get back to the Park underneath.
Now that I'm looking at the pics on my computer instead of phone, I'm with you, Jim.
OP, I'd take the Garandicon...and then trade it for a WWII era example. But that's just my preference, haha.

Thanks guys. So if I were to remove the spray on bluing on my Carbine, the original parkerization would be there? Ill likely do the trade so I dont guess that it matters all that much but I digress. I would prefer to get a WWII one but they are worth more than my Carbine. I paid 1000 for my Carbine, hopefully im not losing any.

It sure looks like a paint to me. This is especially noticeable in your last image of your carbine.
Honestly, from the pics, it looks like spray paint. To satisfy your curiosity, you could rub it with some lacquer thinner and a rag in a hidden area. If it is just spray paint, removing it would certainly help the value.

As for getting a WWII era Garandicon, some folks go pretty crazy over the H&R made ones. You might just be surprised at who may want to trade.

As stated the carbine has been spray painted.
If you can pull the trade off without stripping the paint..... Do so.
Removal may not be easy if it was sprayed with a 2 part (hardener included) paint like Duracoat.
I'm a carbine guy with little interest in the Garands.
But if it were my choice, I'd trade for the Garandicon as long as the barrel and action were ok.

Thanks for the update! Enjoy it! They’re mechanical marvels — I think you’ll enjoy breaking it down and looking at how the parts ineract.

Good deal. The most important thing is that both parties are happy.
