SxS 1800's Shotgun FINISHED

Hi folks..way off topic here but wanted to share some pics of my SxS i just finished...its between 1887 to 1896 and I completely refinished it including acid dipping and re bluing to bring out twist pattern slightly. Came out GREAT !!!

yes i understand about damascus...im dropping this from a 12 to a 20 gauge with adapters just to be extra safe...there is no rusting or pitting inside and will only be BP brass rounds. i think this gun is safe since the previous owner only had shot modern ammo out of it despite NOT being nitro proofed. He used it for skeet shooting. I will be taking it to a gunsmith first to have it looked at though before its fired.

Nicely done! Just curious if you rust blued it, or did you use a chemical process? Was the acid dipping was for stripping the old finish, and did it harm the barrel soldering?

I actually used vinegar..yes VINEGAR lol to remove the old bluing and it ate 100% of the old stuff away and down to BARE plain metal in about 5 min. Then i blued and acid dipped with Ferric Chloride acid and water 4x repeating to just etch the steel just enough. I used OXPHO cold bluing and it was amazing stuff. 5 coats of Tru Oil on the wood and 20 to 24hrs between coats.

"The Double Gun Journal" Did a test on some damascus barreled shotguns to try and destroy them. It makes for some interesting reading. They can be much stronger than you might think. But like so many things, condition and manufacturer are important.
