Does the hand even engage the ratchet?

    Johnny45--

There are a number of issues that cause what you described? I first would do a detailed down to the small spring cleaning of the revolver. I would get an exploded diagram of the revolver you may not find one for the M1937 revolver. But the one for the S&W M1917 Revolver will work just as well as that many M1937s were built from surplus S&W M1917 parts bought back from the US Government after WWII. (There were two separate purchases of the S&W M1937 Revolvers) Pre-WII and Post WWII for the Brazilianicon Navy. Check and see if any of the spring are missing if no look at the condition of the parts itself is the ratchet, hand and frame worn? Replace any parts that looks worn. This may require some hand fitting to get the revolver to function with the new parts. The S&W M1917 parts will fit your revolver. Please bearing mind that S&W M1917 have not been produced since WWI when the US Government took over the S&W in WWI. Pre-N frame and N frame parts may require extensive hand fitting to work properly.

Looks like there is a spring under the trigger that needs to catch one of the tines on the pawl {pawl is in good shape}need to remove spring block and take it from there.
