Reloading for the M1A

I would like to reload rounds for my Springfield M1A. In my Hornady reload manual, they have a recipe for Accurate 2495 powder using a 155 grain A-max bullet. Has anybody here used that powder or bullet in an M1A? Any opinions?

I use either 4895, 41.5 grains, 155 sierra's. 168's the same. That's the age old formula that works great.

Thanks for the input. I originally chose Accurate 2495 because that had a fairly large spread between minimum and maximum charge. I am now leaning towards IMR4895 since it seems to be very popular and I am reading a lot of good things about it, plus it also has a large spread between minimum and maximum charge.

I think I will be going with what you guys recommend, it falls in line with what I have read. A question...is it true Hogdon has acquired IMR? Also, from what I have been reading, any problems associated with loading for M1s and M1As seem to be centered on improper primers and primer seating. Assuming proper primer installation, powder charge etc is there any other concerns that need attention over and above normal reloading for semi auto rifles? It is my desire to get neither myself or my rifle blowed up

I use CCI "white Box" primers, a little harder cup to guard against slam fires.
After sinus surgery (rear sight buried between my eyes) from a out of battery discharge (case to long) I run every case through a Moe's case gauge after sizing. I keep them .002 short of a FIRED CASE, not SAAMI spec's.
It takes a little extra time, but not nearly as long as it did to heal up.

Probably a good idea, it'll fire them after all. Hard won't bother it. Just accidental detonation won't happen. I had rifle team asking me to load 168s too...and pulling the other bullets no matter what they were.

If you look in cartridges of the world, they show you spec for military 7.62 for the M14...might help you.

Wow! Sorry to hear that happened! I have been using Wilson Headspace gauges for all the calibers that I reload. Hornady recommends Winchester large rifle primers for their M1A service rifle loads. Any opinions here about their suitability? Again, trying to get as much info and insights as possible before starting.

Winchester primers didn't work in a friends M1A. Leaking, etc., ended up eroding bolt face. That was with Lapau brass.

I also had that with some Remington primers and an AR. Just pointing out others could also do it. I pinholed the bolt face severely...careful...
