Broken tip M-1 Garand safeties sales and marketing.

I dusted off one of my Garands and took it out shooting and loaned it to a lady to shoot. Showed her the precautions and when I showed her how to work the SAFETY I was dismayed that it did not engage.
So off to eBay to get a replacement. My first bids were about $10, but then I spotted a pile of 10 safeties for about $10, plus shipping. I jumped on that one but when they arrived, EVERYONE HAD A BROKEN TIP!!

Now it's not a matter of jumping to conclusions or not viewing photos or reading the description of the auction that is my problem, but the FALSE narrative of marketing the safeties. Here is the common theme:

"these safeties are NOT really broken from use, they were MODIFIED by GI's in the field as it was found that by removing the tip the safety would engage and disengage quietly. So if you find your trigger group has a tip broken off....leave it! The last user was a combat soldier!!

Field modified Unmarked M1icon Garand Springfield Safeties. These were appropriate for WWII SA M1 Garands mid to late WWII, post-war rebuilds and into the 4.2 mil range of post-war production. Several available so select quantity desired when adding to cart. Note the production variance in finish colors, all are original and have NOT been through refinishing, just need a good wiping off."

oops: My title reads Trigger, but I mean Safety....it seems I cannot edit the thread title.

Now, first of all, I am of the STRONG opinion that this is pure BUNK....another word is probably forbidden on this forum. What say You??

I have seen a lot of M1icon rifles, more WW2 era than anything else when I was an armorer - but never seen a broken tip on a safety on a rifle that was US property. I have seen
broken tips on third world imports for years.

If you got it from fleabay you can ask for a refund through "False information the items are defective" get a refund and bin the safeties if it is proven your suspicions are correct then leave -ve feedback on the seller.
As if those safeties get out there again it could cost an unknowing person allot more than just $10.......

    Broken M1 Garand safeties

I did make a claim on the group of safeties. The seller was near furious. I would invite all other viewers to see the eBay sales on safeties and complain. Not to be dissuaded by replies from the seller.

It is beyond me how these safeties with broken tips have appeared for sale ins such large quantities. I would surmise there was a cast-off pile of someone doing De-Mills.
Equally surprising is the number of sellers that repeat the same slogan of "field modification" for a 'quiet safety'. Bunk again.

The broken safety tips are a sign of Third World modifications like South Americaicon and so forth. You still here fabricated stories about the M1icon such as the "ping" sound of the empty would alert the enemy to charge (of course it only takes seconds to reload another clip). Another story about M2 ammunition being developed for the M1 Rifle because it was lower pressure while in fact the M1 was developed around the M1 cartridge.

the guy is ****ed that I want a return but stated he sold HUNDREDS to satisfied customers. I find it near impossible to believe that this latest lot of broken safeties just came off the boat from some other 3rd world nation and somehow now we have HUNDREDS of them for sale!!

Here is from another "commercial" seller:

On a historical note, these safeties are NOT really broken from use, they were MODIFIED by GI's in the field as it was found that by removing the tip the safety would engage and disengage quietly. So if you find your trigger group has a tip broken off....leave it! The last user was a combat soldier!!

Field modified WWII Springfield Production M1icon Safeties, marked C46015-9SA. 9SA Safeties were used on production M1s from mid Aug 1942 thru end of Aug 1943 (ser range 77x,xxx thru 1,877,654), also used as spares in later rifles and during rebuild. Two pictured available so select quantity desired when adding to cart. Note the production variance in finish colors, all are original and have NOT been through refinish, just need a good wiping off.

They're busted, that's all they are. They now have no value...

As long as you got your dosh back good oh! I would have put -ve feedback like "Avoid like the plague" and left it at that as if you get too personal it may open litigation as some wallahs are like that touchy feely types whom whilst ripping people off are quite happy except when exposed.
They are broken like BAR says and the guy should not be selling them, can you imaging a GI saying to his Sgt or Commanding Officer I just broke it so it would be quiet, cods wallop I say.......
