Help with 1897 “D” series WWII?

So I think I should have looked one more before I bid on an auction. Won this auction, but now I am doing more looking, not sure what I got. The serial number is 937xxx which would put it in a 1942 range, but it is a “d” series which makes no sense. Did I just buy a fake?

Also has a W Marked heat shield. Would that mean it was for a model 12?

    It's an E, not a D. The early WW2 97s have that weird kind of serif E whereas the later WW2 guns have a plain non-serif E.
