    Vietnam gear

6 February 1962 was when MACV began in Saigon. 56 years ago. When I was a kid, "56 years ago" was before WW 1 even began. Now 56 years ago doesn't seem so long ago.
Anyway, here's some Nam gear picked up along the way.

The Colt SP1 was made in 1982, so technically it's not period correct. Looks good, though.
To the best of my knowledge, it has not been fired since leaving Colt. Shooters think that I am crazy, but collectors understand.

Thanks gentlemen. I already do have some "chieu hoi" ammo bags. What I do not have (and probably never will) are those early waffle mags & pouches.

Enlighten me please--what is the metal bracket on the A1 pistol grip for? That's it in pic #4, correct?

To stop the rifle from being put on full auto. GIs love the "Machinegun Kelly" technique of engaging the enemy.

I don't think you're crazy but I don't see the huge collectability because I too remember them NIB. I know what you mean about the days when lots of WW1 vets were around and every dad aged man had been in WW2. Everyone...

As an off, I never thought we needed FA on our rifles, even the new C7 (M16A2)...when SA was good enough for the FN why oh why go to ammo wasting mode...? Anyway...I can tell you the reasoning but still don't agree.
    Regards, Jim

Jim....I agree, SP1's are not on the same level big $$$ collectibles, but if you wait long enough, the oldies might become goldies. There's already a "retro black rifle" bunch out there. Instead of a copy-cat retro, what's better than the real thing? When I get an itch to burn off some nitrocellulose, I have a few other shooters to scratch that itch & the SP1 stays in the safe.

Colt's first batch of AR's went to Malaya in December, 1959. That's just shy of 60 years. It's hard to think of the AR 15 as a "curio & relic".

As long as the government is paying the bill, I'd like to try FA a few times, but I couldn't afford it. My Dad got in the middle of a Muslim vs. Philippine Army battle on the island of Jolo in the 70's. He said there was a lot of M16icon FA, but not much aiming.

Eventually even we might be worth something, regimentally speaking...except we're used...very used...
