A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. As far as I am aware they were primed with red oxide. Might be worth chipping some of the paint to see if there’s any under there. Doubt the fakers would have bothered.

I've had cause to strip & repaint a number of somewhat battered tins over the years & I'd agree with you on that Chosenman. I can't recall off the top of my head seeing one that hadn't been red-leaded under the green.

There are other features that also suggest when a tin is a repro. Certainly concerning the square ended fabricated tins; the radius of the folded edges is usually more generous (a more pronounced rounded ninety degree angle at the edges) than the 'sharper edged' originals.

Nah. Good thing I did pay too much, but would be too expensive to send it back. I'll keep it anyway since I needed something to protect my real No32 MKIII scope.

I was pretty when you mention the real oxide paint. Some of the paint came off when I was screwing the scope and the underside of the paint IS RED. I'm guessing these reproductions are getting closer to looking almost like the real thing.

The fakers are getting so good now at their trade that in some instances over the years with the likes of the furniture trade that they have fooled even the experts so who is to say it will filter to other collectibles around the world. Where ever the unscrupulous people can trap the unwary thats why this site is so good at exposing things that are not quite right sad as it is some of us (Me as well) at some point missed the mark on items but only once.
