Hi I have recently acquired an 1884 trapdoor Springfield serial number 492052 and was curious if it comes up in the srs database. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the try. I’m going to strip it down for cleaning tonight and will try and get some photos up. Someone painted all the metal at one point in its life so I want to get all that off and scrub some of the grime off the stock.

Tom, if you have access to the data, could you please look up 407884 - my new Model 1884. It has "MASS" stamped on the action - but as anyone could have done that at any time in the past 130 years, one must regard the stamp as dubious - unless there are others in a nearby number range with the same stamp.

Patrick, Sorry no numbers close to yours. The stamping MASS as well as NJ have been seen. They are not spurious but marking to show state militia ownership. Massachusetts and New Jersey. New York used on many occasions large numbers stamped into the buttstock. The regular army did not allow for unit marking on weapons as they might be re issued to another unit.

Tom, thanks for the quick reply! I am relieved to hear that such a marking is known.

The 1873 I have has been in our family for a very long time. It belonged to my grandfather who I never knew. But from what I can gather from family at least a 100 years. The serial number is 194210 and if I’m reading the trapdoor serial numbers right it was bullt in Nov/Dec 1882. Stamp on stock says 1882 as well. I would appreciate and information that you may come up with.

    Thanks
    Doug

Cetme24 sorry for putting my question in your post. Not having my glasses and trying to post on iPhone doesn’t work well for me anymore. Mods please remove from this thread..
