43 SPANISH AIRFORCE

I was out looking at parts for a 43 SPANISH AIR FORCE Mauser and ran across a Bayonet Stud Extension. I tried looking up infromation on it but so far have turned of nothing.

What is the purpose of this?

Adapter to allow the use of different bayonets.

Why would they need to do that if they are issued bayonets that match the rifle? Just seems odd.

Not odd, just frugal. Not all rifles were produced with matching bayonets. and the adapter made it possible to re-use bayonets from earlier/obsolescent rifles, such as the Mauser 1893/95 types and the Spanish Model 1916. Older bayonets were often longer, and probably considered to be a compensation for the short reach of the Air Force Rifle.

Ball, "Mauser Military Rifles of the World", 5th. Ed., P358, has a photo of a Spanish Air Force Model 43 Short Rifle fitted with such an adapter.

On my rifle,it is installed and pinned into place. It fits the issue bayonet. You would need to remove it to use an earlier one.

As far as I know, it is the M43 toward the bottom. I'm far from an expert, but I went thru this trying to figure out which one went on mine
The Riccheri device was invented in Argentinaicon so older pattern bayonets could be fitted to the 1909. The Spanish also adopted it for the La Caruna M1943. The is no such thing as an Air Force M1943. The Air Force Mauser is a M1944 which are rearsenaled Radom Wz29s and have no provision for the Riccheri device.
