Did I just look at a WRA M1917 Barrel?

    Newbie Question,
To start with, I'm not familiar with M1917 models or parts. With that said:

As I was leaving a local pawn shop, the owner asked if I knew anything about a loose barrel he picked up in a loose lot purchase.

Typical dark lighting in there, but first seen the barrel had nothing attached, like a frt sight.

    Barrel had,
The front slot key way for a frt sight like a M1icon carbine barrel.
Below that was a W stamped, a Flaming Bomb below the W, and the date of 12-18 below the bomb.
Barrel had almost a full skirt.
Barrel measured from muzzle to skirt... 25 1/4". Measured 26" to end of threads.
    Index line on the bottom.
On the 'Chamber' there was what at first I thought looked like one side of a deer rack.
Closer look, seen it was a Eagles head, a smaller bomb stamp, then another Eagles head below the bomb.
I found stamped sideways on the barrel's left side: -300-WIN-MAG-
Finish was dark gray park, showing thinned wear from frt sight and band attachments, but overall clear of rust on the exterior.

I did not look inside, so I can't at this time tell about bore condition, or if left or right twist.

Shop Owner thought it might be a 1917 Enfield.
I don't know, but found pictures I can use for EXAMPLES to show SIMILIAR MARKINGS I seen.... except the -300- WIN- MAG- stamp I seen. Which I assume was rechambered from 30-06.

Owner didn't mention a asking price and I have no use for it, just curious about it and trying to help him properly ID it. If need be the shop is close by, I could always stop back in and give a better look see.

Will checking the groove rotations and number of help ID this barrel?

Little Info, I know...... Any possible thoughts?

    Thx,
    Charlie-Painter777

You have probably deduced that what you have, was originally a Winchester made Model 1917 Caliber 30 06 "Enfield". It was manufactured in December 1918, and was accepted by the military by the ordinance "Flaming grenade" stamp. Hope this helps.

Stopped by this shop today to pick up a copy of his FFL for a new purchase in my future..
Remembered and asked about this barrel.
Owner replied he hadn't had time to bother with it yet.

Would I be correct in assuming there would be little interest in a 'Sporter barrel' like this ?
    Or any monetary value ?

    Thx,

Since it’s been rechambered, I’d probably guess it’s worth $50 bucks or so.

    RC,
Do appreciate your time, really do.
    Really a nice looking barrel..........
But after just doing a completed auctions search and seeing WRA barrels still in 30-06 though a bit rough, fetching $100 and under.
I see no reason to waste any more time on a 100 year old barrel now chambered in 300 Win Mag.
I'll let it set and do the same..... set in front of the TV and catch a good old movie while the snow flies.
Yeah thats it, 'Uncle Buck' is on !

    Thx Again......... from the Tundra,
    Charlie-P777

    No worries at all!
In one of your pics it looks attached to a rifle still. What’s he asking for the whole gun?
With decent looking wood (aka not gaudy 1970s style high comb Monte Carlo) these rifles make attractive spotters and that’s a pretty cool caliber!

    Oh, missed that.
Still, somebody may just want one some day. Wouldn’t be bad trade fodder if you could snag it for 20 or 30 bucks.

That means the whole inside of the receiver was changed too...nothing remains... It appears to be assembled to a rifle...is it? I'd leave it too unless you need a 300 winnie...

If the barrel is loose then it could be hooped at the back end too...
    Regards, Jim

I might be interested in that barrel... What shape is the rifling in? Do you have contact info for the seller?
