Krag magazine cut off, long and short

I am helping a friend try to ID a variety of parts before he sells them. These appear to be Kragicon magazine cuttoff's. My question is 1) am I correct and 2) why the different lengths?

They are Kragicon magazine cut-offs. The long shaft one is for a U.S. model 1896 Krag. The short shaft cut-off is for a U.S. model 1898 Krag.

P.S. - The short shaft cut-off also is for the model 1899 carbine, which is identical to the 1898 rifle action.

Kragicon cut-off is a pretty common part. Extras were likely made too update earlier Krags that had cut-off that functioned in reverse of late model 1896 cut-off and 1898/1899 cut-off.

    Your friend's 1896 cut-off is the late type. 1898 cut-off can work on 1892 and 1896 Krags.

Cut-offs sell for $15 to $20, routinely. Some collectors need one for missing part.
