An interesting location and a divide that should never have happened IMHO.
As I drove through No Mans land under the watchful eye of the twitchy Turk sentries, I could see, especially in the Embassy area as it was then in 1974, the amount of fire that had taken place to try and protect it from capture. Guards jockulating fro me and other British PARA's to take our berets off...........yeh right!! I was there to do a job to honour our Regimental fallen and thats what I did in the correct manner.

Every building ransacked and very sad to see man's inhumanity to man everywhere, including the school. The only peaceful place I found was the CWWG Cemetery I visited on Remembrance Day 2016.

I'll have to get the book out and pilfer a few pics out of it today. The grammar school, looks like a back photo as the front sags from the impact of a dud 500 pound HE... You have a pic of the Turk line, almost a rare pic. The guard tower's something new. The barrel barricade dates back to the beginning though... I was there '75/'76 and 1980. Louroujina was my first stop in '75 out by Stavros monastery, mind you they were all related to the Stavrovouni Monastery. Just like all the Mosques were related to the Aya Sophia... Then four months of inner city. Second go I was up by the old airport and Recce Pl so I saw everything...

I was back last month seeing my lad whose in the Army, and I have to say, its always been a beautiful country and the people are sound. Sadly the place is full of Russians now and a bit of a concern!

My nephew was there for 18 months @2001-03 with the AFP under the UN banner patrolling the city and when he patrolled no mans land was issued with a HK MP-5 with orders STK intruders.
He then went to the Solomon Isl for 14 months helicoptered into a remote hut for a month at a time with 1 sat phone call home each week was a pretty tough gig for him he said the jungle without guides would just swallow you up when your just a few meters off the beaten track dark & wet. Lots of unexploded WWII ordnance all over the place.

Here's a couple pics for now, the front(as I call it) of the Grammar school, then a pic of the Shackleton at Nicosia airport. Then the airport, me after disposing of a rodent at the old refugee camp up by the airport. Then one of me the night I was heading over second time...and one of me in the center of the three of us in our Recce det. Our Sgt was absent. The short guy went to highschool with me, was in an MG det with me, went to Canungra LWC with me...and this overseas tour...
