Stacking Swivel

Just an observation but I have noticed that almost all No1MKIII and No4MKI I have come across have the stacking swivel missing. Was there a reason they were removed or just lost in battle. Has anyone else noticed this? Any ideas? Thanks!

Stacking swivels were removed in service during the 1930s for the SMLE and no4s were not issued or used with a stacking swivel, probably added to the rifle by civilian users...

If you look at later Indian and Australian icon

MkIII nose caps you will see that some retain the stacking swivel bolster but it's not been machined out to accept the swivel. Additionally even later Indian MkIII nosecaps don't even have the bolster. I'm not sure of the time frame this modification to manufacture was made but I believe (guess!) it was mid WWII. I'm sure someone here knows the correct time frame.

You will find the odd No4 with a strange non-british issue stacking swivel, but those were added by the Turks.

The only No4's that had piling swivels were the 1930's trial models.
The Turkish icon

version is properly called a stacking bar as they had mousers before they got No4's I have one with that, but I just could not stomach the sewn on "RAG" they called a sling, so I cut it off.

Installed a proper web sling on it.
