20 on the stock of my 03A3

Does anyone know what the 20 on the rear on my stock means? Is it worth keeping it on?

Could be a rack No. up to you as it is part of its history if you do not like it then remove it but there may possibly be dis-colouration meaning that due to the paint being on there for so long the surrounding stock may be a different colour that what is under the number

Another stock with a numberI got this early Rock Island single stock bolt stock

I got this early Rock Island single bolt stock years ago. It had been paint white for some ceremonial functions. it was a nice sold stock with a faint Rock Island cartouche, after being very careful in removing the white paint, I noticed the A T over 21 stamps on the butt.

I had to assume it might be US Navy because of the stamps, later Tom in NJ sent me
an email and said the stock marking was a US Navy designator for the ocean going tug the USS Bagaluce in service from 1919 to 1946Attachment 92298

Yup, it’s a rack number like Cinders said.
Some folks hate them, some love them. I love them - adds an extra tangible layer of history to contemplate.
