They weren't varnished or finished in boiled linseed oilicon which has chemicals in it to make it dry quicker. Like most military rifles of that vintage, the wood was treated with raw linseed oil. There was a dye powder that was mixed in the warmed tanks too although the AG42's I've had didn't appear to be stained at all. The wood was probably just dipped in a warmed tank of RLO and hung up to drip dry. Strip the varnish with the correct chemical stripper and then you can stain it to taste using alcohol based stain if you like. Then apply RLO and it will look perfect. RLO, not BLOicon will also take on a darker reddish tint with age.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). I have allowed the wet application to stand for considerable time on my various attempts.

I have not tried to wrap it in cellophane (to keep it wet) for an extended time. I may give that a try, depending on how the 1850 performs.

Thanks for all the commentary. I will upload a new picture to show the area I've been working on. After my first failure with the 'citrus' stripper, I quit applying the stripper to the entire stock. Instead, I have been applying each new attempt to a small area.

(I'm pretty tied up today, so I may not get a picture uploaded until tomorrow...)

    Cheers,

    - s.west

No need, next step is burning it off with a heat gun.

1850 will dry if you do that, use steel wool and keep gooping it on and working it. Don't try to save the product.
