A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. On 8 December 1941, the day after the Japaneseicon attack on Pearl Harbor, the army activated its first mountain unit, the 87th Mountain Infantry Battalion (which was later expanded to the 87th Infantry Regiment) at Fort Lewis, Washington, south of Tacoma. It was the first mountain warfare unit in U.S. military history

The 10th Light Division (Alpine) was constituted on 10 July 1943 and activated five days later at Camp Hale under the command of Brigadier General Lloyd E. Jones.

On 6 November 1944, the 10th Division was redesignated the 10th Mountain Division

The countryside would make sense too then. Didn't know they were so close to home for me, wonder if I missed their name on the list at the North Fort gates?

By the way, you wouldn't recognize North Fort today.

No I wouldn't. It's been about 30 years...I remember being about 17 and climbing a ladder at the end of a barracks to see over the rooftops at the expanse of barracks in every direction. I was present to see the last of the 1917 original south fort buildings go down. Very historic place, built in emergency for the gear up for WW1...
    Regards, Jim
