Barrel Peened to Index ?

Seems I recall a older CCNL that had a tip in it to peen like in this picture... I believe to get index marks to line up (?)
Maybe not a CCNL, but seen it somewhere.
Or could it have been for head space ?
Or did I see the peening on the Receiver instead of the barrel ?
He!! now I don't recall what I seen....

Can someone explain it to me please?
Pic is from a recently completed ebay auction.
I need a vacation away from this Tundra they call Michigan..

Looks to me like they peened to make the barrel tighten up sooner to line up the marks

CMP gunsmiths advise that take-off carbine barrels usually CANNOT be used due to headspace issues. There are usually a bunch of take-offs (often mutilated) available on Gunbroker. I guess some folks will do whatever it takes to avoid buying a new barrel.

The way we used to give a bit of extra crush factor was to tap the edge of the barrel ring in front of the threads and then it crushed back to shape when assembled. Just a touch...

In some places, barrels just aren't available, you have to work with what you have.

I have seen that kind of peening on the rear face of the collar on the barrel extension of AR 15 barrels. Makes sense

Center punching is not the correct method to tighten an over-turning barrel. browningautorifle has outlined the correct and commonly used method which is perfectly acceptable in most circumstances. Gentle and even peening of the edge will displace enough metal to achieve a very tight fit without any obvious damage.

There are shims being sold for M14 barrels and shims
have been used on Model 1903 barrels

Head space in a carbine is not hard to fix if one knows what they are doing. In fact many times USGI barrels will just screw on and have acceptable head space.
