New Zealand marked long arm display next weekend

I will be displaying 14 New Zealand marked rifles from Remington M1885, Remington M1903, EC88, .22s and No. 8 at the Michigan Antique Arms Show, Novi Michigan. April 28 and 29.

14 is a good number! You need some Lee Enfields, P14, Martinis (MH & ME rifles and carbines), an L1A1 SLR, various handguns plus Sniders and Enfield variations. Then there are the MG's (Maxim, Hotchkiss, Vickers, Brownings, Brens, Stens, Sterlings, Thompsons, etc.). There are many collectors here who specialise in NZ marked firearms and none have a complete collection. If you add in the guns of the various militias, Armed Constabulary, Maori wars, Gold Escorts, etc. it makes the basis for a very large collection. NZ stopped marking firearms after the first 1,000 SLR's (about 1960) although the Steyr AUG rifles that arrived from Austria in 1988 had a serial number range that had the NZ prefix. Keep up the good work, and don't forget to post photos of your display.

sounds wonderful Woodsy, but its hard to find what I have in the US. Though it seems most of your .22 rifles found their way here.

Photos of some NZ marks attached. Some are bit scarce like the Charlton (only 10 examples known out of 1500 made), ARMAF MkI Sten (only 5 examples known out of 1000), NZ Local Pattern Sten (les than 10 examples known out of 10,000), '07 dated ME carbine (only known example), L1A1 (only the first 1000 marked out of over 15,000 supplied), 1938 Bren (gun #14 XX'd out from first 20 supplied, note the NZA for NZ Army).

The Charlton thread was awesome, did you get the gas port sorted?

I have yet to make the final adjustment to the trigger mechanism to get reliable full-auto fire with the Charlton (I have been a bit slack, too busy hunting and gold prospecting, but winter is nearly here so I will get back in the workshop). I will post the results when I get it running (it is very gentle to shoot on semi-auto). Another Kiwi forum member and myself are collaborating on research for an article on the NZ Stens for publication in a few months. Peter Laidler has a good chapter on them in his Sten book but I have since uncovered more info and design detail that needs to be shared. My ARMAF MkI is now resting in a hitherto unknown original transit chest with 8 magazines, loading tool, screwdriver, cleaning rod, and ruptured case extractor. We were never aware of the existence of these AD (Air Department) marked chests until this empty one turned up a few months ago. We are also trolling through NZ Archives for documentary info on the first shipment of Brens, and the 1907 ME Carbine shipment. This info will be shared in due course.
