    Mauser M96 stock repair

Many years ago I bought a nice Mauser M96 pistol manufactured before WW1, from a veteran. It had a matching numbered wooden stock and the pistol was all matching too.
The stock had what appeared to be a "battle field" repair, a thin steel band wrapped around the stock near the swivel.

Recently I read that during the post WW1 period this type of repair was a factory/arsenal repair and was a common stock refurbishment. Anyone have any additional information ?

The Italianicon Navy ordered flat side, large ring hammer C96 Mausers in 1899. I have read that the cutout for the large ring hammer weakened the stock and the Royal Navy Armories made repairs similar to yours. The photographs I have seen show much more metal used in the Italian repairs. Best. Tom

I have also seen another M96 stock with an identical stock repair. It was on an Austrian proofed in 1917 and 1926.

If these M96 pistols (Germanicon & Austrian) had the stock arsenal repaired with the metal band during the Post World war 1 period,
I would assume these pistols were still in military possession until the end of World War 2. As I would doubt civilian ownership
would undergo this type of repair or even knowledge of the repair

I had a pre WW1 7.63 with an identical style repair but had it professionaly repaired by a friend that had been a stock maker with H&H before moving to Canadaicon.
