Cast Mosin Load

Put some of the my new Accurate 215 gr. .314" FN bullets from a mold I acquired several months ago down range with a couple test loads. The second loads shot great and will be a keeper for sure but I still want to push the load up a few grains an see just how much velocity I can get out of my alloy before accuracy goes south. I will be getting the chrono out and repeating the test load to see what the velocity is as well as the heavier loads I plan on shooting.

I'm using H-4895 to give the bullet a nice slow gentle push. I'm also trying powder coated as well as traditional lubed bullet to see which shoots best.

good load id say, unfortunately bore diameter between the children makes it tough to duplicate.

50 yards does not tell much . Look at the bullet holes , they are unstable at 50 yards . That does not look good for 100 yard + .

camera is at an odd angle to the surface... however SOME folks might not like that grouping... but its rather good. a lot of PREMIUM grade 22lr target rifles would KILL for that group at 50

bob q seems correct and observant on this one. The hole off by itself clearly shows the telltale smear indicating yaw as it passed through the paper. Not a good thing at greater distance.

I was a top shooter in BR-50 for years . That size group at 50 yards would mean the .22 target rifle was not competitive .

If I remember right the go to universal load for lead in rifles was about 15 grs. of Red dot for accuracy.

Slow powders like H-4895 tend not to work well with cast bullets and MILITARY rifles . Since each military rifle is different , there is no " universal load " . You have to see what works best with what ever bore size , bore condition , bedding and other factors that are found in each rifle . After test firing 1000's of cast bullets in many different military rifles at 100 yards for group , I have found fast rifle powders like 2400 , SR-4759 and 5744 work best .

red dot, blue dot, go find an older edition of lymans cast bullet book. 7.62x54 IS somewhat limited in the older editions but it does have choices.

4895 IS loved for lead bullets on cast bullet forum.. But pistol powders are more fun....


I DO think its funny that no one here ever considered TARGET was moving in the wind making some interesting hole shapes. Had that happen to me long ago, shooting on a windy day and a flapping target DOES like to make holes that resemble a good tumble.
