    Hi Steve - period WW2 can opening is a lesson that our new unit members dread! Especially in the strict ww2 period material only shows / events.

    So we use that devices for piercing the pour and breather holes in the canned milk. Having pierced a similar hole in the lid of canned stew, you want to keep the hole and cut edge tight on the inner face of the forked blade and shear the can lid 1" at a time in an upward draw, and then advance without undue play - keep the can edges tight around the blade fork. Very effective when mastered - very ragged when practicing

    I hope this helps...else grind the can lid off on a section of concrete and thoroughly clean the grinds off before popping the lid
