    Unhappy Brass shoulder deformation

    Hi all,

I am a newb to the Lee-Enfield game and I am looking for some insight. I recently picked up a 1916 No1 MKIII* and the first time at the range, I noticed some consistent deformation on the brass. Unfortunately, I really don't know what it tells me. I have looked down the chamber with a flashlight but I do not see anything obvious. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

    Thanks in advance!

Give the chamber a (Carefully) good scrub with 0000 steel wool concentrating on the area. I had a No1 MkIII rifle like that but the divet in the chamber was so bad the barrel had to be replaced discovered after the first shot could not open the bolt despite the shop saying it was good to go and the only time I did not get my gunsmith to check a fire arm I was interested in.

I have cleaned up chambers with a long rod on a drill with a bit of cloth on the end. (Just make sure the rod can't bounce around and damage any part of the chamber or action).

One interesting thing however, in regards to you saying that it looks fine in there, one particular MKIII I own has a visibly pitted/marked/discoloured area on one side of the chamber, but after banging out some rounds none of the cases jammed up or even looked remotely deformed, so perhaps looks are not the best means of troubleshooting unless you have something like a bore-scope.

Not quite...try a brush about .45 cal size for the chamber, that's the affected area. Use oil or carb cleaner on the brush and just give it a few seconds to do the job. Then clean and examine. There's something wrong here, probably rusty chamber.
