I agree with the above except that it is not an Irish Contract Rifle as it is not in that serial number range.

This rifle was made shortly before the Britishicon switched to the FN L1A1 so it appears to have never been issued to a soldier.

You have a lovely rifle which looks almost unused. Yes, you definitely want to change the butt. Look on eBay. A chap named dean1564 on eBay in the UK is a great source. I have had great success with him. (He may well be on this forum)

To change the butt is fairly simple. Ideally You should use gunsmith screw drivers for a snug fit to avoid damaging the screws.

    Remove sling.
Remove rear sling swivel and it’s 2 screws.
Open butt trap door and remove pull through and oil bottle from butt. (If present)
Remove two butt plate screws and butt plate.
Make a long straight rod from a coat hanger with a small hook on one end, and using a flashlight, hook and remove the washer that the oil bottle rested against. The washer was to silence the rattle noise the oil bottle might make banging against the bolt head and it prevents a screwdriver from engaging in the slot.
Using a long shaft screwdriver, undo the bolt inside the butt holding butt to the body. Turn counter-clockwise. If it is too tight, use an adjustable wrench (spanner) on the shaft of the screwdriver for extra leverage. You may need to tap the butt gently on the sides with a rubber mallet to loosen it after the machine bolt has been loosened. By the way there is usually a short spring washer under the bolt head.
To put the other butt on, just reverse the process.

Value? You did not state what continent you are on or what currency you use. In Canadaicon the value is roughly $600-700 as is, because a buyer would need to replace the butt with a mint matching colour and correct maker, year etc. Once properly fixed, value might be about $800-900.

Damn Seaforth that is mental to an upside down islander like myself. That would be advertised in aus for $2000 and it would sell. Gotta move to canada some day.

dferguson, you could always take it to a gunsmith to see what he reckons about that cheekpiece, it may just be possible to get it off without hurting the stock. Not saying I know how, but there are some smart people out there. Why do terrible things like this happen to nice guns?

Wood is very forgiving. I always wanted to do a Frenchicon Polishing course and finally did one several years ago.
You learn tricks there that would see you through something like this easily.
Don't despair, its a fairly easy job to do with the right filler and varnish trust me!!
If you can't do it take it to a French Polisher or a local piano shop they will be the guys.

Same sort of price it would go for here in UKicon, maybe even a bit more, have seen £1500 being asked here for something like that.

Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 2 in unissued mint condition

Gentlemen, thank you very much for the information provided on the rifle. In case any of you are interested, I have decided to sell the rifle. GUNPOST | Local classifieds for used firearms in Canada If I kept the rifle it would get marked or rusty and it's too nice a piece to do that to, so I've decided to sell.

Can't imagine how it would get rusty, but moving it on is normal too...thanks for getting back to us with the end result.
    Regards, Jim
