    7.62 Garand Build

About 7-8 months ago I picked up a unissued 7.62 Navy barrel on another forum, this was the heart of my latest build .

I installed the NOS barrel on a real nice SA 5.4 receiver ,that I had. Used a NOS 65 Series SA bolt , just needed some lapping to get it to headspace.
I chose a refinished trigger group I had, and did alittle trigger work to it to where it has a nice 5lb pull.
Installed excellent condition USGI NM front and rear sights , balance of the rest of parts are unissued.
NOS Op Rod, NM gas cylinder, 65 series SA bolt, gas screw , lock and internals.
Did some NM mod work to the rear handguard but that's where I decided to leave the rest to the experts. Sent the rifle off to Ted Brown for a bedding job and NM work to front handguard. He remove the liner, glue and screwed lower band to front handguard
I am happy with his work and pleased on how this build turned out
Unfortunately I haven't been able to spend any time at the range with her yet

She's looking very good, can't wait to see how the rear sight marks line up after zeroing. I did one of these for regular grunt work, not a NM...a few years back. It shot great. This one should be stellar.

Nice job. I built one years ago too with a nos Navy barrel. It doesn't have any match mods but still shoots better than I can!

I have to ask and expect the phonebook on this one, why did you lap the bolt lugs for headspace? Why change the bolt instead of ream the chamber? I was taught way back to give the chamber a touch...that was how I got mine to headspace too. It was tight and never had a failure to close, chamber or fire... ??

Lapping the bolt to smooth contact surfaces for better function and consistent even bolt closure. Bolt was so close to headspacing I was able to lap it and kill two birds with one stone

Understood. A ream might take too much in that case.

I recall years ago when I was at the Great Western Show in Pomona, CA I saw a case of those Navy barrels for sale. They flew out the door. I think the newly made Criterion 7.62mm barrels are superb tubes and are sold for reasonable money.

That's what I had here and they are good, just that they sell for what the market will bear here. Mine was $400CDN.
