Thread: 1917 Eddystone Stock Screw Location

    1917 Eddystone Stock Screw Location

    I am trying to determine where to locate the cross stock screw behind the receiver lug.

    Pic shows the lug cavity at the top. How far to the rear of that cavity indicated by the top arrow does the screw cross the stock? Approx bottom arrow. In other words, how much wood is between the lug cavity and the cross screw?

    And how high from the top of the stock is the center of the screw?



    This is not a pic of my stock. Just a reference photo. I did not have this one in hand to get measurements from.

    I want to put a screw across my sporter stock but do not know where to locate the hole for it.

    BTW, I bid on the old ml-surp stock for sale on eBay as some here suggested. It exceeded my funds at the present time and I did not win.

    15/32 is what I measure from the edge of the recoil mortise to the center of the hole drilled for the cross-bolt.

    Fantastic. Thanks for getting this info for me. Exactly what I was looking for. So it seems like about 3/8" for wood between bolt and lug.

    And just how essential is this cross bolt on the 1917 in a sporter stock?

    I will venture to say that on a well fit and non petroleum contaminated stock the cross-bolt would not be a necessity in 3006. I would however focus my attention on the rear sleeve and small spacer that supports the bottom metal in front of the magazine. And even only then if the wood working was opened up more than necessary in the front.

    If it's shooting well, I probably wouldn't mess with it at all unless there was a problem. Thats a nice looking stock that's on there I think. Maybe the only sporter stock on a M17 that I would agree with some.

    First, there is neither front nor rear sleeve in the stock. I don't like that.
    Second, although it looks real nice, it is hand made from a very nice piece of black walnut that may not be "stock grade" wood. There are some issue with the grain that give me pause for a '06 rifle. Might be fine for a 30-30 or a 7mm Mauser. But this thing really kicks!

    I have to get some sleeves properly inserted and secured, then look at the cross bolt matter.

    The swivel hardware, sling, and butt place all looks to be 1940's or 1950's vintage. Real nice workbench job. Kind of has character that factory mil-surps don't have.

    Anyway, for what it is I just want it safely working right.

    I understand the issue but I think it would be a good idea to get in touch with a custom stock maker.

    Drilling a hole has its own issued and what kind of cross bolt to use (and size)

    My dads 1903, it has a light sporter stock and it has no cross bolt. Good hunting gun, kicks like a mule, when I range shoot I have a slip on pad I use
