Lee Enfield EAL Rifille

Hello All, new to the forum.

I was given a Lee Enfield after a family member passed and have from time to time tried to figure out what it was specifically. I did end up identifying it as a Lee Enfield EAL rifle from the markings and a few other sites. Just wondering if anyone knows the history or any interesting facts about this rifle, from what I understand there weren't a whole lot of them made (approx. 7000) or so and they were used by the RCAF as a survival rifle but that's about it. If anyone has some more knowledge about this rifle I'd love to hear it.

Just one more thing that is confusing me is the serial number, I did find some info on the serial number but its not much help, the following is from a web page dedicated to the EAL:

The E.A.L. Rifle is found in both civilian and military models. The civilian models are serial numbered in the range of 2000 to 5000, while the military models are numbered in the 6000 to 6999 range.

The confusing part is the serial number on mine is 58XX so I'm not sure what that tells me, it looks like mine is the military version as it has the 200 and 400 yard flip up sights and from what I can find out the civilian version has the peep sights.

That was the best info when that write up was done a few years ago. Since then there have been a number Military style rifles surface with serial numbers between 5000 & 6000.

Civilian style rifles with serial numbers below 1000 have also showed up.

I have one in the 5000 serial range also. It would appear the 5000 to 6000 serial numbered rifles are of the pattern adopted by the military, but are not proofmarked. Perhaps EAL changed their pattern and the military then bought some part way through that pattern of production.

I was told by the LCMM of small arms some years ago that he gave a full list of the serial numbers of the EALs that were still in service. There were 2 or 3 hundred languishing back around 2000. I thought it may have been Wheaty that he gave them to. That list might shed some light on the serial range of the DND rifles.
