but my eyes are getting old!

My eyes are young and its hard, but if I can offer anything extra I will say I 'think' I can see what looks like a charger bridge just in front of his hand and a shiny brass butt-plate under his arm. In most of the other sporter like stocked rifles I can see the tell-tale 10 round mags hanging out to confirm being an Enfield, but some have the mags obscured. Almost all in these photos seem to have the fore-end done away with right in front of the mid-band, with the exception of our unknown prone friend.

Those are all fairly well known previously published photos, most of which have been posted previously here

As you'll see by comparing the threads, many of those photos were taken at the Canadian Corps School of Sniping at Mont des Cats in June 1916.

Many but not all Canadian brigades and battalions seem to have taken a fairly relaxed attitude to "sporterizing", but there is what also appears to be a Lee Speed sporter in use as mentioned.

This is generally believed to be George Paudash, his observer looks aboriginal to me. The other fellow is just clowning around in a German field cap.

Seems he served less than a year in France due to various medical conditions. IIRC he was already quite an old man when he enlisted and was most unhappy about being sent home.
