    No4MK1 target rifles

Picked these up out of a local gun shop. These are single shot. Both have L42A1 type barrels and PH-5C sights. I am not familiar with the added proofs on the bolt handles and receiver rings. Does anyone know, are both rifles proofed to fire the 7.62 round?

Interesting rifles and a neat find.

The stamp that looks like a maple leaf I believe were used to mark rifles set up for the Canadianicon version of the NRA matches. DCRA rifle if I am not mistaken. I believe they were 7.62 but the ones I have are fully stocked. They look stock other than the 7.62 barrel that is close to stock dimensions and without the bayonet lug machined into the end of the barrel.

Do a quick search on DCRA on the forum and you should get some hits.

Both these rifles started out as DCRA target rifles. One bears conversion number 976 and the other 1076. Both these would have been proofed in there original DCRA configuration (full military furniture and replacement 7.62 No4 profiled barrel)as noted by the "stylized maple leaf" which appears on the bolt near it's CN and on the receive by the CN. It would also have been on the original barrel.

Both these rifles were converted with heavy profile barrels post 1973 when the DCRA rules changed. The 972 has an Enfield produced 1972 barrel "D72" whereas the 1076 has a 1971 barrel "D71". both barrels are Britishicon proofed at 19.0 Ton for the 7.62. This would have been independent of the action as the receivers are not mark with any Brit proof symbols.

One concern I have is that on both actions the current barrels have no breeching washer (see the space between the receiver and knox form). Typical these would be snugged up to the receiver with the breeching washer and head space set from there. have this checked out if you're buying either of these.

Both are restocked which is typical of a heavy barrel conversion. They do shoot well.

Nice pair. Where are you located?

    For those asking:

DCRA = Dominion Canada Rifle Association (Still active and have a website)
    CN = Conversion Number
D = Enfield - last Brit barrel maker

I checked the appearance of the barrel and action juncture on both rifles against an L42 and they all look the same. It appears there is breaching washers present. Headspace is good as well.
Thank you for your help. I look forward to shooting them.

If $400 each is the right price, then yes.

    Good Day,
Congratulations on your outstanding find. Over on the Canadianicon Gun Nutz site and under MilSurp, there is an extensive ( currently 62 pages) historical, photo essay and serial number list on the 7.62 DCRA No4 converted rifles (CanadianGunNutz.com). Please consider posting your rifles information for posterity.
    Best Always,
    Mike
