Got the 1917 Eddystone to the Range-Pics

Last week I put the rifle back together. I left it alone for week while the JB Weld cured. I used it around the cross bolt and at the receiver rear "heels" where it sits in the stock.

Went through 60 rounds of Sellier & Bellot FMJ 150gr. This is their "Garand" ammo. Figured it is the closest to the ball that would have been original. Not the best for accuracy, but close to what the rifle was made for.

This target was a ten round attempt at 100 yards. Five of the group of six at 2 o'clock were the first five rounds. I paused and looked through the spotting scope. Looked good except a bit to the right. I adjusted the front sight and shot the second five. They scattered. I think I lost my rhythm or something.

I shot another ten round target, they were still scattered. However they seemed more centered to the left than the first target. I called it a day at that point. Besides, a breeze was coming up from the right. By the way, all the shooting today was standing at a tripod, not a bench or prone.

So I packed up and took a picture of the rifle. Kind of a cool old dead manzanita bush made a good perch for picture taking:

I think I have the front sight set about right. Next outing will tell all. But before then I will reduce the aperture in the rear sight. That should help a lot for consistency. On my other aperture rifles it certainly has (M1Aicon, another Eddystone, 308 Stoner gas gun).

    Not too bad at all.

Also as they get hot they seem to wander more. Closed in barrel, contact etc.

Shrinking the rear aperture does help the sight picture a lot.

Its the only iron sighted rifle I can shoot worth a hoot.

Since that outing I plugged and redrilled the aperture. I think the drill size that fit the stock aperture measured about .095. I drilled out the JB Weld plug with a .062 drill IIRC. I have some rifles with smaller apertures. But this size hole frames the front sight ears just right to my eye. I also placed the hole in the lowest part of the plug. This puts the aperture center about .015 lower than the original. All this is on the base aperture, not the ladder aperture. Hopefully this will lower my group a little bit at 100 yd without having to fuss with the ladder aperture, which I never find as secure as I would like. I am used to how the aperture sight is firm on an M16 and M14icon. They didn't quite do that a hundred years ago.

    Anyway, its been fun!
