    M1 stock markings?

Looking at another post yesterday, I saw that stocks are marked in the sling cutout. I checked mine and there it was, never noticed before, very faint TN and above what looks like TRMBL. Searching on stock markings, I found a couple of references to 'TREMBLE'.

I assume that Tremble was the company that produced the stock that then went to National Postal Meter where the M1icon was completed. I don't recall ever seeing Tremble mentioned in Bruce Canfield's book. I guess there were other stock manufacturers?

The stock is marked with the US Ordnance cross canon cartouche and what I assume was the manufacturer when the carbine was assembled - NPM (National Postal Meter) and the name of the US Govt inspector FJA - Frank J. Atwood. The stock is now on a Standard Products receiver (s/n 2167459) with an Underwood barrel, marked I-44, which is how it came to me.

The carbine is deactivated to comply with UKicon firearm laws. It's a nice M1 with high wood which I believe is a bit unusual.

Any confirmation of the above would be much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Charlie

Your stock is marked TRIMBLE/TN, for Trimble Nursery & Furniture Co. Rochester, NY which is the company that made stocks for NPM.

What do they do to deactivate a M1icon carbine?

In the UKicon it depends on the date it was de-activated and the regulations at that time.

Before 1995 firearms were subject to a much lighter form of de-activation. The receiver and barrel were slit to render them incapable of containing the pressure of a bullet being fired. The barrel and receiver pinned/welded to prevent bullets being chambered and parts being swapped (new barrel). The bolt/firing pin cut at an angle. The barrel would have a steel rod welded into it. But all this was done in a way that - if you got a good 'de-act' - wasn't immediately apparent on viewing or handling. The carbine could be stripped, cocked and dry fired. The mag capable of being filled with inert bullets These were called 'old spec' and until 2017 commanded the highest price.

After 1995 the regulations were tightened; moving parts like the bolt welded up.

In 2017 the laws were changed completely and de-acts are completely welded solid with no moving parts at all, mags welded in (or so I understand, I don't have any). It is now illegal to sell or transfer firearms not to the current specification, but they can be retained by the original owner.

Maybe right for some, but for me a wall hanger is not something I would be interested in.

Maybe a BAR. The rebuilt semi's are $4500+, while a real BAR is $40k+ ( if you have the paperwork). JMB's most impressive endeavor, IMO...

I had a 2X BAR cut a way. Sold it last year. It was a monster. That is a 4" wide window. The smaller cartridge is from my 2X Carbine.
