windage knob on early Mark 111 rifles

It is my understanding that most windage knobs were locked in place and fixed so they did not work. I found on my old BSA 1909 Mark 111 (also '09 barrel) a nice working windage knob that even makes audible clicks when you turn the knob !

I checkedAttachment 96106Attachment 96107Attachment 96108 some other rifles and also found a working windage knob in a Enfield 1903 Mark 1** I.P. rebuilt in India in 1914. The third rifle that had a working windage knob was a Enfield Mark 1*** CR 1283 that had undergone rebuild with Mark 111 wood and parts, this rifle also had a Mark 111 leaf with working windage set in a Mark 1 rear sight base.

photos sow the BSA 1909 and all three rifles with working windage knobs

I had several that worked during my collecting of them. I didn't think it unusual then though...

I have 9 MkIIIs fitted with working windage sights 5 of those are numbered to the rifles & 1 un-numbered, have 2 more in my parts box, 1 working, 1 fixed, the fixed one no longer has the wheel attached, an early lesson learned, thankfully not a matching numbered part

I have a NZicon marked 1917 BSA MkIII* with a matched 1920 barrel and numbered working windage sight. After the war, Armourers must have used up old stock.

5th I thought the windage sight was discontinued around mid '16 as a factory fitted part would the '17 stamp relate to an FTR! TIA
I only have 1 spare as the other sits on my April manufactured Lithgowicon.

Windage sights still assembled onto lithgows well into 1917. Actually, I think the highest serial number I’ve seen on a Lithgowicon sight is around 85000 so that would indicate they were still on rifles close to end of 1917
