    Carcano markings

Can anyone give me some information on the markings on this 1940 m91/38 short rifle?

    Yep.
If you want more info, check this site: Storia del fucile 91. There is a ton of info. In Italianicon, but a ton.
If you need translation, just mail me.

Thanks for the information, I didn't know about the fascist year date.
Why does it have a Britishicon proof mark?

I see you are in Australiaicon, perhaps it is a Commonwealth requirement. If not, it was in Englandicon at some point in it's history. They require all rifles to be proof tested. It could be what we call a bring back in the US where a soldier took it home after capturing it. From there, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe the soldier immigrated to Australia and took it with him or it was exported to Australia back in the days England didn't destroy or deactivate them.
