    Another 1903 found...

    Hello,

I would like to have some advice please for this springfield1903.
    It's my last found.
(the general condition does not seem too bad.)

    Best regards from Franceicon

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Maybe it's just my old eyes, but I have difficulty reading the serial number and barrel date. The Scant stock is a replacement and the rifle appears to be have been refinished.

Advice about what? Looks like a typical 'shooter' 1903 to me. Old Guns'(Antique and Collectable Firearms and Militaria Headquarters) S/N look up says the receiver was made in 1918. Model 1903A1 with full pistol grip type C stock date from 1929. I can make out the barrel year as 1934.
I'd guess may have been arsenal refinished vs Bubba's House of Parkerizing. Not a bad 'found' at all.

I don't like this Scant stock, it looks like it was made by an apprentice carpenter, sorry for those who like this stock type...
    I will search a decent "S" stock.
However the barrel is in a good shape, no pitting or rust!

I've always thought that too. Always thought the "C" looked far better. Nice barrel too...

It's interesting to me that I see such a wide variance in the quality (or lack thereof) of Scant stocks. Some have nearly the quality of GG stocks, others look like they were made in an 8th grader shop class out of a cull 2x4!

I know we've discussed it here before, weren't the scant stocks made using the "C" wood shaper setup and the stocks were lacking material? Thus the cheap have assed effect? I've also read they were made from material surrendered by Germanyicon after WW1 for reparations and they lacked material to complete the grip at the small.
    Regards, Jim

To come back to this scant stock, the seller says that this rifle was found as it is in the east of Franceicon during WWII.
    I don't believe that...
The receiver is dated 1918, alright and the barrel was replaced in the late 30'S.It appears that scant stocks were provided after 1941, so my 1903 should have a S stock, isn't it?
    Regards
