    AR-15 and M16 bolt bolt catch sequence

    Most shooters will not notice, few collectors might notice the differences in this sequence of bolt catch variations. The first one(left) is very difficult to locate (there are even fakes for the retro people, but still easy to spot)

    I dont know much about these rifles never held one, but the first catch there is no tag or hook at the bottom of the release catch tab! MBWAG

    Internal photos of bolt catch

    The first bolt catch was rather thin and was soon replaced in production for both military and civilian service.

    The modification added a much wider area to support the lower section of the bolt when
    in the locked back position.

    I can see the first one being harder to engage when you don't have a mag in place...thus the added long piece on the outside.
