A “U” stamped magazine is Underwood? From all the research I’ve done with magazine codes it’s been Union Hardware. Meant all original to mean how it left Rock-Ola’s factory after inspection to be issued for the war effort. It hasn’t been to an Arsenal for the new sight or barrel band, parts exchange etc...maybe I’m wrong? Just beginning this journey into the carbine.

thedoo,
Your correct.... U=Union Hardware.
You've met 'The sky is falling Sunray' who leaves that same generic reply to any mention of Original when the M1 carbine is mentioned. Next is the link he provides to which I believe he's never read.
Please read replies #7 and #8 in this link:

Curious if your front sight pin is staked like this early RMC 1,7 mil ?
Try our SEARCH box and type in Rock ola, you'll get leads you may find interesting.
Happy Thanksgiving BTW,

It looks very similar to your photo Painter but my pin isn’t as pronounced. Very similar though...

I've seen 2 types of front sight staking methods on RMC carbines.
This link will show both types.
First picture is a side by side comp of loose RMC vs WRA frt sights.
Lower picture I just posted above.
