    USMC Unertl Sniper

The Fall issue of the Garand Collectors Journal that is hitting member mailboxes this week has a feature article on the 1941 Marine sniper rifle. Yes, it's outside our area of expertise, but it is based on documents newly discovered in the National Archives and presents new information that challenges accepted wisdom. It was written by a GCAicon member who has done excellent research on the M1icon and written several terrific articles, so we decided to publish it. I'm sure it will generate some passionate discussion.

Yeah I researched him. I think it's Carrer J. Which this picture was taken on Guam in 1945/46. This was a 3rd Marine Division photo.

I researched him a while ago, but I'm pretty sure this is Jesse L. Carrer. He was with the 5th Service Depot on Guam. Which I think the 5th was formed in August 1945 on Guam. His MOS was 521, which was like a catch all. Which means he technically didn't have a MOS. He was whatever they needed him to be. So maybe here he was being assigned to clean weapons.

There really isn't another Marine match in the rosters that can place another Carrer on Guam other than Jesse.

lol pretty much. This is the official explanation from back then. But you can read between the lines.

    521 - BASIC

An enlisted person who does not possess sufficient military experience or training to warrant assignment of another SSN. May perform a variety of tasks not requiring specialized training or experience. Note—Persons with this SSN will constantly be observed to determine their potentialities, and whenever possible will be developed into military specialists and duly reclassified when qualified.
