    BAR,
It may be a machining mark.
And it doesn't appear to be a Cast sight.
But the thought came across from what I could see that reminded me of a circular or shield shaped mark that had 2 digits in it like 62 (for 1962) that I believe were seen on some Bavarian variants.
I believe I recall seeing examples on front sights among other areas. IIRC when seen on front sights it was stamped on the outside.
    Just a thought for now.....
Then again my brain is numb..... -24 wind chill here last evening.

Hey guys I have a question. It was stated earlier in this thread to use a GI M2 ball round, not a commercially made one. I do not have or have ever had a surplus GI M2 Ball round, but I do have plenty of PPU 30-06 specifically for M1icon Garand.are the PPU dimensions exactly the same as the GI M2 ball round or is it just the commercial stuff that you can't use to estimate muzzle wear? I know PPU is obviously commercial, but would it be close enough for me to estimate my muzzle wear on my Winchester carbine?

30.06 Springfield FMJ seated to the top of the cannelure, ( sp ? ) should work fine as far as I know. I believe 150 gr, but guessing.
I don't shoot or load these. Someone will help 'Us' out.

And with a carbine it doesn't take too much rifling to group reasonably well either. That barrel he showed us should be fine.

If you seat them to correct OAL for ball as stated in the book they are the same. OAL is OAL. The bullet weight matters for OAL... Factory will be close enough.

A couple years ago I had a 5 rd. stripper clip of .30-06 M1icon Ball, something like a 172 or 173 gr. bullet. After I sold it, I wished I would've tried using one for a "bullet test" on a carbine - don't know if the results would be the same, but probably not. - Bob
