Hows the rest of the rifle, is that the only NM part?
As I understand ( someone correct me if I'm wrong) there were a number or NM rifles loaned to Greece, who they used as standard infantry rifles. When these rifles were returned to the US Army many came back that the only NM part was the barrel . Unfortunately these garands are now just a standard garand with a NM barrel. No more , no less
This may be what you have?
    Please post more pics

The front sites, rear sites, (not hooded), gas cylinder, operating Rod are marked "NM" and the front hand guard is glued to lower band. The stock is also bedded and the trigger group has been worked and polished.

I am still doing a lot of research. I just had the wife mail out $25.00 to the CMPicon for serial number research. Doing my research there are a lot of changes made to a NM M1icon almost every year.

    Receiver is a 1945 Springfield.

1954 dates are the most common found on Type 2 SA's because they found about 50,000 at Schenectady that gauged tight enough for NM. It has nothing to do with when the rifle was assembled.

The stock has been refinished but the proofs are viable on the left side and in the grip.

The Operating Rod is marked "NM" and "7790722 RA".
