    Looking for gunsmith info

My SIL has me trying to get his grandfather's Arisakaicon Type 44 rifle back into shooting condition. I've tried some loads and I'm getting patterns not groups. The barrel is in poor shape. I've located some replacement barrels. What I need is info on someone who is familiar with these rifles and can replace the barrel and check the headspace. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dave Haralson

I took a heavily bubba'd Arisakaicon to a local gunsmith for a barrel change and he had a heart attack in the process. It was not an easy task on this particular rifle. He had the proper wrenches, etc too. He got it off, I put the new barrel on but haven't fire it yet. Had to shim it to get it to index so a bit concerned. Will be sandbagged for sure.

I probably could do this myself it I had the proper tools. They are too expensive for just a one time fob.

I have broken a few tools doing them myself. They are the hardest of all to get done right.

That barrel is very hard to remove for several reasons . The barrel is convex where it means the receiver and takes a very hard crush fit to seat . Once crushed they do not spring back . There is an extractor cut out in the barrel that must match up . Did you slug the bore ? Early made 6.5mm's have a very large groove dia [ up to .270 ] and will keyhole . Try a long heavy round nose .

I'm loading .268 dia PPU 123 gr. I'm trying several powder/load combinations but I haven't found an accurate load yet. The bore doesn't show much in the way of rifling is why I'm thinking of replacing the barrel.

'Bravo' - IIRC, the Japaneseicon 6.5mm barrels have 'Metford' rifling, which has shallow convex grooves and rounded lands.
If you are not familiar with this rifling style, it can be mistaken as being quite worn, when in reality, it is in good condition.

I'd be very surprised if you'll find a smithy who knows Arisakaicon's. Not that much demand. Highly unlikely anybody will have 6.5 Jap head space gauges either. Other than Pacific Tool and Gauge that is. $70 for a set with a Go and No-Go. 6.5 mm x 50 Arisaka Headspace Gauge Set (6.5 x50 Japanese, 6.5 x50 SR) (Go / No-Go) - Pacific Tool and Gauge
However, at the bottom of this page there's a link to a guy named Don Schlickman who does know 'em. No address other than an e-mail address though.

    butlersrangers:

Your description of the Metford rifling fits with what I'm seeing in the bore. Thanks for that information. My goal is to get enough accuracy for him to hunt deer out to 150 yds. I'm looking at a 2" group should be adequate. i'm going to keep trying to develop a load that will be in that neighborhood. A barrel swap just may not be practical. I've told him about the best I may be able to do is make a nice "wall hanger" out of it.

    Sunray:

Thanks for the link. I'll try and contact him if I do decide to replace the barrel to see if he can help with that.

Thanks guys. It is always good to be able to come somewhere to get reliable information.

I have never seen a .268 123 grain . Did you mean .263 ? If so the bullet is your problem .
