    Using 147 grn .308 bullets

    Hi all.

Recently bought a few 147 grn fmjbt .308 bullets to load for my 7.62 nato and 30-06

Wondering what load data people are using for these. I have Varget and imr4064 on hand.

I will be using military brass for both. From my reading, it should be okay to use 150 grn data reduced by 2 grns as a start point?

    Cheers!

It is definitely ok to use 150 grain data. The 3 grains won't matter. When you're reducing loads for using milsurp brass, it's by 10%. Varget and IMR4064 are really close in powder weights. Max loads are compressed, nothing to worry about, and are a whole 34 FPS different. Pressures are measured differently. PSI for the 4064. CUP for the Varget. The Varget start load for .308 is 44.0. It's 43.0 for IMR4064. Reduced by 10%, it's 39.6 and 38.7.
Loads are identical for .30-06. Slightly different velocities with Varget being less than 100 FPS higher. Same thing with the pressures. Not interchangeable or convertible.
How many is a "few"? Just wondering if it's enough to go to all the fuss and time of working up 2 loads.

A few is 500! Okay I'll start playing with that and see what I get. Thanks for your advice!

If you can weight sort them, you will find they group better. These are +/- 3 grains and fine for blasting. Weight sorted, they have better accuracy. The cannelure is for 7.62 seating depth. It may be too short for the 30-06 if seated there.

"...playing with that..." Look for around 2700 FPS in the .308. .30 M1icon ammo ran at that velocity too. Heavier bullet in .30 M1 ammo though. .30 M2 ran at 2800 FPS with a 152 grain bullet after 1940.
