Looking for Information on Great Uncle who died in WW1 (Royal Navy)

My Great Uncle was Richard H. Jose (1890-1916) who was born in Cornwall. He joined the Royal Navy at a young age and served on the HMS Hogue (which was sunk in 1914), before the HMS Hogue was sunk my Great Uncle was assigned to the HMS Defence and promoted to Petty Officer his serial number was 236246.

I have posted his photo. My question, is it possible to locate additional information about his naval service.

I'm not sure if the Royal Navy records are kept the same as the Army; but I managed to get full service history of my wife's Grandfather. He served with the Irish Guards in 1914.
We got pages of info from even is days as a reserve prior to joining fulltime in 1912. Info on his wound and even which hosipat ship varried him home etc. It cost 25 pounds for the search and copies. I contacted the Irish Guards via their website.
It would be worth looking at Royal Navy website. There's been a lot of interest in WWI due to the Centenary last year. I'm sure you'll find something.

    RCS,
There are established routes for acquiring family records of soldiers/sailors and airmen during wars. Some of these routes necessitate the need for proof of the enquirer directly to the source for those "private" records to be released which normally commands a search fee whereever they are recovered from as you will understand.
The first port of call is to look at this link to a recognised webiste here in the UKicon and ask the National Archives if they hold the original or a copy of his service and follow their guidance.
Research guides - The National Archives
If that fails the Royal Navy Association will I am sure help as All records are now held in Glasgow in Scotland and his may be there.
Good Luck if you get stuck don't hesitate to ask for help.
    Gil

    Everything is online at Ancestry.co.uk

UK, Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services, 1848-1939

Or as Gil said, from the National Archives through their database search.

Royal Navy ratings service records 1853-1928 - The National Archives

As his number doesn't have a letter prefix, it indicates he joined before 1907

Thanks bigduke6, I also found this information too, what I was looking for was information on the ships he might
have been assigned to during his naval service. I know he was on the HMS Hogue which was sunk in Sept 1914.

I was able to find more information on the ships that he served on

Thank you for the additional help

I can assure you that if you write and demand his personal file, every course and ship he ever served on will be on there. Know this from personal experience having done immense research into a local lad who died on HMS Hawke in 1914. A ship that the RMS Olympic crashed into in the Solent in 1912, and the conspriracy group will tell you was swithced as the Titanic whilst they were both berthed at Harland & Wolffe shipyard in Belfast, something that should never have happened. Both ships in dock at the same time for an ailing shipping line!!

The lads files were all there with everything he ever did in service. As your uncle rose through the ranks, be assurred, you don't get there by default. All his course and promotion will make you and your family very proud and definitely worth going for!!

I want to thank everyone for their help as I was able to locate a lot of information on my Great Uncle, Richard H. Jose who serviced in the Royal Navy from 1906
to 1916. His serial number 236246 indicates seamen and communications ratings. He served on the following ships: HMS Impregnable (training ship), HMS Hogue
(sunk in 1914), HMS Majestic (sunk in 1915), HMS Diana, HMS Ocean (sunk 1915), assigned to the HMS Warrior in July 1913 and to the HMS Defence on April 25,
1915. He was killed in service on May 31, 1916 at Jutland on the HMS Defence. He had been promoted to Petty Officer on 15-4-15.

    RCS,
Great when it all comes together. A brave man who deserves to have his record pulled and kept and digested by the family forever.
