    A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered.     Fresh water. I never thought about it before as it pertains to the Pacific. Was there desalination on ships at that time. I could Google it,but this forum and the replies are much more interesting,

    I do seem to remember reading that the Navy sent the grunts on Peleliu a bunch of 55 gal drums of fresh water - in used, unwashed gasoline drums!

    I’ve read that one too...but can’t recall which book it was. With the Old Breed, maybe?

    rcathey, you are correct it is that book. The author said he was put on a detail to clean them but they didn't know why they were cleaning them until they were on Peleliu.
