A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Judging from the other equipment in the photo, I am guessing that they are either a regimental or division command radio sets.

Jim -- I am thinking they are a broken down SCR-284. The SCR-284 was used for communication from the front line to the Fleet. The unit was so heavy that it had to be broken down into two units to be carried. The SCR-284 mounted in a jeep proved to be damaging on the equipment so it was carried my troops. I found a reference that carrying a SCR-284 was like carrying a modern window air conditioner on your back.
