My combined Quality Hardware rehab thread

I decided to start a combine, dedicated thread on my new CMPicon Quality Hardware Carbine rehab project. I have parts of it in 3 different threads, so I want to put it together.

I started with a CMP "Service Grade" Quality Hardware mix-master in an Italianicon "FAT 77" stock. I picked up a very beat up, stained Q-RMC stock on eBay for $70. I knew it needed work. SInce I don't get the carbine itself out of Commiefornia jail until the end of the week, I will start with the stock.

The stock had been stripped and roughly sanded, but was a mass of black spots and splotches. Under the tutelage of our Charlie Painter 777, I set out to save it. It had a couple cracks, but they were not a problem I haven't fixed before.

First step was to do two successive applications of Bar Keeper's Frien paste, each time wrapping it in saran wrap tightly for an hour to soak, then rinsing and brushing off, then redoing the same process again. The result: MUCH improved!

While MUCH improved, I felt putting on RLO now would display the now much reduced spots. After careful fine sanding, and wiping with Mineral Spirits, I used Minwax penetrating wiping stain (not an all in one, but rather oil based stain). I chose Dark walnut. After one heavy wet application that soaked in for 15 minutes, I wiped it and let it dry for 4 hours. I then used a 3/1 mix of RLO/BLOicon to give it a start on the finish. If I used straight RLO in the winter in the mountains, it would still be drying in May. The 3/1 mix suggested by Charley for this stock worked great. I will do several future applications when it has time to cure.

As you can see, it is quite a difference! While not a perfect restoration by any means, it will better match the condition of the Quality than it would without having bleached and stained. It has just enough "been there, done that" look to where I won't cringe taking it out in the mountains putzing around. The dark walnut stain makes the dark spots far less obvious, though if I had not used the Bar Keepers to significantly lighten them, it would not have come out nearly as nice.

Many thanks to all for their suggestions, but special thanks tho Charley. When I get the carbine out of jail, I will do picks of it and a complete break down of parts.

Stopped by the shop to grab a couple more cell phone pictures. The FAT77 stock is really pretty nice, except the Carbine sits too low. I like the Q-RMC stock I got better. The owner was left handed, hence the repo stock pouch is on the right side. It has a repop sling and oiler, also. I have an original pouch, sling, and oiler to put on the replacement stock. Once I pick it up, I'll use the Nikon to get good pics, especially when I tear it down.

You went from measles to chicken pocks and finally cured. You did a real nice job on the stock.

    IMR,
Boy you sure didn't waste any time on it. Gee I feel like it took me longer to type out the tips than it took you to complete the stock. It sure looks better and has the look just like what you said you were after.
I have a QH 4,751,xxx that is by far one of my favorite shooters. It has a Underwood 3-44 on it which may be the original barrel on it.
Only concern with it is it has a QRMC Type II Hi-Wood on it with just the outline left of the CC. This stock was one of a bulk purchase I made and it had the Korean rack numbers painted on it. Only after stripping it could I see the faint CC. I find when I'm shooting it I baby the stock to keep from dinging it up. Prolly should use a shooter stock for it but haven't got around to it. Sorta hate to mess with it as it's one of my best shooting carbines. Plus I take a tightly rolled camping ground mat that I roll out on the bench for some padding to help protect stock wood.
It has the Bayo band and IRCO rear adj sight. I much prefer the Type II and III rear adj sights for shooting over a L Leaf sight. I don't care for the Rotary safeties and put a push safety on it. The rest is all for QHMC, T3 Q-NL trigger housing, T2 GE-Q Sear, T2 LT-Q Trigger, Q.U. T3 Flat hammer, EM-Q T3 Round bolt with all Q internals, DA-Q T2 (? need to dble check) Op Slide. Forgot to check the Mag catch before I just put it back away.

Also noticed the right outer blade on the N front sight was bent inward. Well just a slight pull outward on it and NOW IT has a crack or split started on the bottom.
I'll have to replace it..... Wonder if I should measure the sighting blade and file the replacement sight's Blade to the same height while it's loose ?
Will have to give that some thought. Really itching to get out there and shoot.... but with Wind chill it was about 0 today.

Here's my QH Shooter, below are some misc stocks I've been poking around on that someone asked for 'Outside Pictures Of'

I agree about preferring Type II (favorite) and Type III rear sights. as "neato-keen" as flip sights look, they are a pain to zero to a load. I also don't like the flip safety. I have an unmarked push button safety I have had for years that I will put on it. I am not sure of it is an original, but the color and wear is about right for an original, and I did get it before "restoring" carbines was the rage. I also have a late magazine catch with the 30 round mag hook I plan on putting on it.

Once I get it, I will completely break it down, except gas cylinder -unless needed (I have the tool). I will probably replace the ejector spring and extractor springs when I tear apart the bolt. I will check firing pin protrusion, too. I have a spare if needed. I also have several new USGI recoil springs (10.25") so I'll put one of those in too. I'll check the hammer spring. If it a 22 coil, I'll replace with a 26 coil. Not too worried about sear or trigger springs. Never had one of either go bad.

IIRC, Quality are spring tube receivers. Never had one with a spring tube. Is there anything I should look for besides dents and corrosion?

I have some WW2 Kings Mill ammo, Remington 110 JSP and FMJ, and some Hornady Critical Defense to load in for a HD carbine use. My plinking will be done with my reloads: 110 Rainier plated over 14.6 grains WW296, and Bear Creek 115 Moly over 11 grains 2400. (the moly, you need to click the rear sight at 200 for a good 100/150 hit). because of lower velocity

Being a retired cop, I have even planned my load out for when I use it as my HD Carbine, I'll use a 15 rounder in it, and have two 15s in the stock pouch. The mag in the gun and one in the pouch will be critical defense, and one mage will be Remington 110 FMJ for more penetration.

A few yrs ago I had a Std Pro stock that was full small nicks and dings. I steamed it and that cleaned all the goo and gunk out of it and most of the dings. Then I lightly cleaned it with steel wool and oiled it. big improvement.

Now come on Jim. His wife just hasn't shoved that area yet. And to think he bought her a new shovel for Christmas and I understand it's already worn out. But to be fair he claims he got her a snow blower now. He is just to thoughtful.:cool
