Dang nice Mag & Bag set

I lost track of who put me onto this special, but THANK YOU if it was a Milsurp forum member.

Northridge has a very nice deal for us Bren'ers in the States. 6 very nice mags with a carry set. I am not sure if the pouches were intended as a stand alone accessory or it they were supposed to be part of the Pattern 57 kit? They send a strap, with padded section that does fit into the wide buckles at the top of each bag, but it is not of the same width as the buckle, so strap can slip from side to side within the buckle. Once weight is placed on them, they do not slide out or down, which is most important. Have not tried it with fully loaded mags and running the back yard. lol. Overall it seems pretty stable when I put the thing together. Certainly better than many of the "repro" fabric materials that end up on the market. Easy way to carry an easy 6 Bren mags without all the other kit.

    BREN GUNNER FIELD MAGAZINE SET

Pretty good deal. The mags individually are $10 and the bag and strap set up is sold at $20.00 alone. So you get $80 retail worth of parts for $50. Now, they are gonna charge you between $14.85 and $18.50 for shipping, but they still don't charge tax for an internet sale as long as you don't live in CA. My set came to approx. $65.00. Not a bad deal. The bags are stamped 41 inside both of mine. I know that picture of the inside sucks and is hard to read, but believe me, they both are stamped 1941. The strap, though a nice match in material and color appears to be stamped 1949? Hard for me to read clearly.

Only one mag had surface rust and I will include that so you can see. The rest, if they had any surface corrosion it was very, very slight. I think these mags MAY have been re-parked at some point in their storage life? Fine by me. They all came with very straight feed lips. None of the mags had body dents. Most seemed to be marked with an Enfield "E". I did not make a close inspection of marks. I figure they are going to be good shootable mags. I will disassemble at some point and clean the insides good. The exteriors are just slightly dirty/chalky to the touch. Not all cosmolineicon covered.

Hope it is OK to post a heads up for product in this section? I appreciate the mate who sent me the heads up. We could always just carry on about how historically accurate or inaccurate this set is for the Bren gun? :-) We can just call it a "Review"...

    Cheers!

My link does not appear to be an active link in the body. Just go to Northridge International website and search "Bren". You will see them.

Pattern 37 auxiliary pouch set but you may not have the correct "yoke" strap.

Thanks Flying10UK. Apologies, as I do not study webbing and gear very closely, so bad call on my part referring to as a Pattern 57. I agree that the Yoke may not be 100% correct, but what yoke would this have been for, dated 1949 and about the same construction as the one pictured on the reference page? This set seems most comparable to the set at the bottom of the page, although the author mentions that the cartridge loops inside the pouches were deleted in 1938. Yet both my cases have them. If it was spec to drop them, I figure each manufacturer would drop the item pretty rapidly.

I see now that no mention was made in manuals but it is generally accepted they were for ballistite cartridges, which makes sense. It is not as familiar to me, and possibly not as prevalent in US doctrine, that the section all carried material for each other, including the section Bren. More of a team outlook, than todays individual equipment.

Of course you know what this means? I will now be on a quest to find the proper, wider, yoke strap....which will cause me countless hours of searching and more than a few dollars I suspect. One affliction leads to another. He He.

It does look like the earlier pouches had a narrower buckle at the top. I still can't reconcile the date on my narrow strap being 1949 possibly? (is it possible it reads 1943?) The narrow buckled utility pouches all seem prior to 1942? That means my Z.L&T WIDE buckle pouches were in production at the same times the M.E. Co utilities were made with narrow buckles. And that Z.L.& T was making a narrow yoke when they new darn well they were making pouches with a wide buckle. At least in 1941.

    My head hurts.

The ZL&T markings are for Zephyr Loom and Textile in Canadaicon. Your strap does appear to be too long and is likely one of the cross braces for the webbing set, or perhaps the strap for a signals pouch or field telephone. The proper, short Bren Utility straps are quite common here in Canada, and usually only fetch a couple dollars. They are often found still bundles in piles of 5 or ten. Here is a link to a kijiji ad with the strap you are looking for. This ad has been running for a few years now. WW2 CANADA 1941 BRASS TIPPED BROAD ARROW MARKED STRAPS $2.00 EA. | Arts Collectibles | Winnipeg | Kijiji

And here is a link to another page from Kharkee that might be the straps (braces) you have:
    Pattern 1937 Web Equipment

The front pouch with the long strap are also available here fairly cheaply, it is the rear pouch that is a little harder to find. I think I have about 10 cases of the front pouch hiding in the shed. I bought them for $2.00 a pouch just to salvage the straps off them for some of my WW2 vehicles

ZL&T changed their name after the war to Textile Industries Limited and started using the TIL marking for their webbing. I have not seen the ZL&T markings on a piece so late as 1949, but then again I am not really a webbing collector. But the 37 pattern web equipment was not superseded until the early 50s with a new generation of webbing here in Canada, and even then, some of the 37 pattern equipment kept being produced for the cadets right into the 70s. So it is entirely possible that your strap was produced in 1949.

Thank you Sten Collector. You made that search VERY easy. I do appreciate that.

Well, Northridge appears to have those rear pouches, although on the web site, when they combined them with the 6 mags, they claim only to have 12 sets left. They do offer just the pouch set for $19.99. I did not take notice of how many pouch set they claim to have?

stencollector, located Glenn and ordered 5 straps. Thank you very much. He apparently still has quite a few of those straps. Anybody need any, I would recommend contact Glen thru the Kijiji web site. Heads up though, an order of 5, at $2.00 each, cost more to ship into the US from Canadaicon than the small order for product. So get a few friends together and order 100. lol.

So I hope to find a use for the other 3 out of the 5 ordered. I was so excited about the original pouch and mag set purchase, I ordered another set! Heck, should have just ordered an even dozen! Seems like a good price.

    +1 for stencollector! Thanks!

Happy to have been able to help you out.

I kind of thought postage was going to hurt, but there is very little that you can do to get around it. One saving grace though is that the Canadianicon peso is currently worth just a little more than toilet paper presently, so those $2 Cdn straps are really only $1.50 US dollars. Same goes for the postage. You can subtract 25% of the rate to get the US price.

I believe the ones offered came out of the old United Army Surplus store in Winnipeg. I was at that auction, and a 20 foot row of surplus would go for $15 to $40. I bought a whole room of stuff for $75, and sold a few items out of it before I even had a chance to load any of it, tripling my money. The store had been in business for about 40 years, and still had a lot of treasures hiding downstairs, some in quantity.

AmEngRifles, unless it's my eyes or the way that your pouches have been folded one of your pouches appears to have a "V" on the front. (Post 1, picture 1) Are you able to confirm that this is indeed the case, please, because I haven't noticed it before on this type of pouch. Thanks

Flying10UK, that is the result of the pouches having been stuffed into a USPriority Mail Medium Box. The whole kit barely fits in, and the canvas feels and looks unissued. I guess after being squashed into that box, it took that distinctive V fold. I think it will eventually work itself out.

Stencollector, now may be s good time to put some pouches for sale ( if you are thinking of disposing of any) as I feel like the Bren semi auto market may have hit a critical point? There have been more for sale on line than at any other time I can recall in the past 20 years. And I doubt may more kits of quality will get to US shores. It is not a huge community, but there may be some owners ready to expand on their Bren accessories.

I recently purchased one of the Bren cartridge bags for use in the anti aircraft mode. Even though I don’t have the appropriate tripod or anti aircraft mount, I am hoping the bag will make policing my brass at the range an easier chore?

I lament that when the Bren 100 round mags were hitting the surplus market in the US about 15-20 years ago, they were pretty reasonable. But not owning a Bren gun at that time, I passed up that opportunity. Doh.
