A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Nope. I was there as the research vessel I was on had docked there for an exchange of personnel. I was getting off and flying home. I had some spare time, and went for a walk. There was a series of placards showing where the Marines had landed, and how much progress they made each day. The next day's placard was sometimes 100 ft from the previous one. They each had a picture or two of what the island looked like from that point at the time of the battle (1944? if I remember correctly). Kwaj is only 2 miles long, and most of it is narrow enough to stand on the beach on one side of the island, and throw a rock into the lagoon on the other side! Nevertheless, it was the scene of some hellacious fighting.

I had a look on Google Earth and remembered the stories about wading from one attack to the next.
